Ministry Programs

Basic Child Sponsorship Program
The children that HUM serves have been abandoned by one or both parents or have lost both of their parents to aids or other diseases. In Uganda, the meaning of 'orphan' is a child without a father. With funds provided by individual, caring sponsors HUM is able to open the doors for local families, who are very poor as well, to take these children into their homes. This program provides nutrition, clothing, hygiene items, beds, bedding, basic medical services and other basic necessities for these children. Many children do not have the opportunity to attend the country’s public schools as fees for attendance, books and uniforms are required. Sponsor gifts help make school a reality for these children. HUM also provides lunches to these children every school day.

Katherine and the HUM ministry staff visit the children’s homes every other month to deliver food and basic supplies and to minister to the family’s spiritual needs as well. All of the sponsored children participate in HUM’s Saturday AWANA Bible club, a special Christmas celebration and other special planned activities throughout the year.

Scholarship Sponsorship Program
Uganda's secondary education is provided primarily by boarding schools and is cost prohibitive to the many children of poor families. Children graduating from the Basic Sponsorship Program may apply for this educational opportunity through the assistance of the HUM Scholarship Sponsorship Program. Many basic sponsors choose to continue with the same children and increase their giving to cover the additional expenses. Additional scholarship donors supplement the educational costs for children whose basic sponsors are not able to increase their contribution.

Several times during the year HUM conducts seminars and special training for the youth.

AWANA (Approved Workmen are Not Ashamed)
HUM uses children’s ministry materials from the AWANA international program to reach the children from the orphanage and the sponsorship programs as well as other needy community children for Christ.

It is required that every sponsored child attend this weekly program. Currently HUM has over 500 children in their AWANA Club.

Orphanage
Some children in Kamonkoli do not have extended family available to care for them. Katherine has provided a loving home for these children. They participate in the same activities as the sponsorship children and attend the local schools.

Currently the orphanage facilities are rented in the village of Kamonkoli. HUM owns property and plans to build a number of small homes to house orphans with housemothers. A variety of other buildings will be built to provide services to the children and the community. This property offers sufficient space to allow for gardening and raising some farm animals to provide the children with the cultural living skills they will need as adults. Funds are currently being raised to complete the primary home on the property, supply utilities to the property and complete the security fencing.

Women’s Ministry/Sponsorship
Widows and single mothers in the Kamonkoli community participate in regular Bible studies and discipleship training. Some receive sponsors to help meet their basic needs. HUM provides medical and other emergency funds to these women as well.

Crusades & Special Events
HUM works with a village church to reach the community for Christ through crusades and special events several times each year. Discipleship groups are set up for training of new Christians.

National Staff Sponsorship
The cycle of poverty in Uganda is perpetuated by limited educational and employment opportunities. In addition to helping the children of the community, Hines Ugandan Ministries offers meaningful employment to national workers. These individuals help care for children, offer educational and Bible teaching to children and local women, assist with purchasing and distribution of sponsorship food and necessities, provide translation of numerous local languages for Katherine and short-term missionaries, and offer administrative assistance.

Generous donors and individual sponsors help the ministry reach more children and support families in this very practical way. Some donors commit to a monthly or annual gift to this program or may contact the HUM U.S. office to find out more about sponsoring a specific employee.
